Summary of Interests/Message
My Smith Family connection:
Mearcy (note the "A") SMITH
born c1791/92 Bingley, Yorkshire
married Shackelton Thornber
(Chr. 15 Oct 1797 Burnley)
m: 19 May 1817 Burnley
& showing - both of this parish.
Mearcy's next appearance was the
1841 census age 50 not born in county.
Shackelton was not in the entry but
their three children were; Robert (20),
Margaret (20) and William (15).
Margaret married my ancester
John WHITEHEAD.
1861 Census - Burnley Lane, Burnley
Mearcy Smith, age 69,
(indicating birth year c1791/2)
birthplace: Bingley, Yorkshire
The next information I have on Mearcy
is an MI in the graveyard of the Haggate
Mill Lane Baptist Church in Briercliffe,
showing, Mercy (no "A")
wife of Shackleton Thornber,
May 4 1864 aged 74 yrs.
That is about all I have for Mearcy,
hope it is of some use to someone,
somewhere, somehow. (I would appreciate SKS with access to Bingley Parish Records 1790-92, looking up Birth/Baptism of Mearcy/Mercy Smith. Thx. Dennis)
Other Smith info I found:
I went looking in some twenty year
old files and came across this
information. I have a photocopy of a
Certificate of Marriage dated
24 July 1909 between
Henry Ogden (31) & Lucy Smith (27)
at Holy Church in the Parish of
Parkfield in Middleton, County of
Lancaster.
Lucy is described as "Widow",
father William Whitehead.
I have no idea who her late husband was,
except that his last name must have
been SMITH. As Lucy did not appear
to fit into my Whitehead family I did
not pursue the matter. There is
considerable other info on the paper
but nothing that would indicate who
her late husband was.

Notes added by Carole:
An entry at the LancashireBMD database,
possibly the first marriage of Lucy Smith
nee Whitehead, mentioned by Dennis:
Marriage Index 1905: Middleton, St Leonard

St Elyn’s Chapel
In the mid-16th Century and probably earlier
(earliest known reference dated 1552) a small chapel called “St.Elyn’s” served Eccleston, Windle, Parr and Sutton, the four villages from which St.Helens the town was formed, and named after the chapel. The latest re-building was in 1926, as stands the present-day church, pictured above. |
