MY SMITH FAMILY
My first known Smith ancestor, James, was born c.1808 somewhere in Ireland (1841 & 1851 census), or Rochdale (1861 census).
He is known to have lived in Yorkshire Street, Rochdale 1824; Church Lane, Rochdale 1836, 1838, 1841 & 1846; 41 Packer Street, Rochdale 1851; and 2-4 Columbus Street, Rochdale 1861.
His occupation was given as a labourer
(1824 & 1846), chair bottomer (1836 & 1841),
plasterer (1851 & 1861) and white limer(1854).
If for the same couple, St Chad's shows banns of marriage of James to Mary Holt of Yorkshire Street 13-27 June 1824, but no ceremony there (James would have been only
16 at the time).
Their first known child was William (c.1830), and five others followed between then and 1846.
Most members of this Smith family worked in the local cotton industry, marrying into other local families.
Emigration came when their grandson Joseph and his wife Harriet with their youngest son Albert went to Canada 1920, and thence to USA 1923
Albert's brothers Robert followed in 1925 and Ernest c.1927. However, Robert returned to Rochdale in 1927, and his parents Joseph &
Harriet c.1932.
Descendants of Albert and Ernest Smith
still live in the USA, while descendants of Robert now live in the UK (but no longer in Lancashire) and Australia.
Living descendants of the children and other grandchildren of the original James Smith & Mary Holt have not yet been traced.
27 SMITH family members with data are

Margaret SMITH m Thomas MORT
Margaret was the daughter of
Robert SMITH of Little Hulton.
Given below are extracts from material that Sheila has published on the Mort site which include reference to this marriage and family.
|
|
"Extracts from the Preston Guilds"
Adam Mort’s eldest son, Thomas was married in 1619 on October 21 of that year. An annuity of £60 was settled on the bride,
MARGARET SMITH, daughter of yeoman
ROBERT SMITH of Little Hulton.
This money was to be paid twice yearly on June 24 and December 25 in the south porch of the parish church at Leigh. If any part of this sum remained unpaid for ten days after these feast days, a penalty of £15 was incurred. This settlement deed is one of the rare documents bearing the signature of the great Adam Mort.
MARGARET outlived her husband by many years and on October 28, 1675, her executor Robert Mort released all money due to her estate under this 1619 deed.
Very much later, April 14, 1699, Thomas Mort, Grandson of Margaret [nee SMITH] showed the writing to Nathan Mort and Margaret Finch and explained why he thought the arrears had been forgiven.
Estate tenants, 1619
On the day after this annuity grant, October 22, 1619, Adam Mort settled the whole estate and lordship on Thomas Mort, the eldest son and any male issue of the marriage with MARGARET SMITH. If no son happened to be born, but only daughters, the heir Thomas had power to grant them annuities of £100 or less. Thirty-one tenants of Adam, whose names are set out in an appendix, heard the settlement deed read over to them on December 23, 1619, and signified their agreement to it.
Extracts from :
Alder House & the Morts of Chowbent
Alder House near the town of Atherton was built in 1697 by Ralph Astley and his wife Ann.
In 1724 Alder House was purchased in joint ownership between Roger Rigby and Adam Mort. There are two possible Adam Mort’s who could have purchased this property:
1) Adam Mort re the younger brother of Thomas Mort who inherited the position of ‘Lord of the Manor of Astley’ after his father Adam died in 1659. The other brothers being Robert and Alexander.
Adam Mort’s GRANDPARENTS were THOMAS MORT of Hulton and MARGARET SMITH, and his Great Grandfather was the original Adam Mort of Dam House.
2) Adam Mort son of Thomas Mort of Peel House in Little Hulton. His GRANDPARENTS were ALSO THOMAS MORT of Hulton and MARGARET SMITH and his Great Grandfather was also the original Adam Mort of Dam House.

| Atherton became a Parish in 1859. Before that date it was a township in the Parish of Leigh. An interesting account about the town's history, has been provided by Peter Wood at the Lancashire Online Parish Clerks site: |
