Original Aims of the Project

At July 2005, & still is, foreseen to be a long-term and ongoing project with the following objectives:

Develop a Website dedicated to this Family History Project.

A "Gene Pool" for those researching Smith ancestors who were either born, married, lived or died in the historic counties of Lancashire, West Riding of Yorkshire and/or Isle of Man.  For pooling and sharing family history data, information and/or stories about their ancestors.

Online resources: as an aid for researchers of the Smith surname in this area.

To eventually develop databases for - eg - Parish Register data; 19th-20th Century Census Data; births, marriages & deaths indexes, Cemeteries Data & War Memorials.

Local history / geography:

Information & Links relating to Lancashire, W.R. Yorkshire & Isle of Man districts & parishes.

Long term goal
Link up distant cousins descended from SMITHs of these counties.

Progress so far

From July 2005, the original Lancashire and Bradford-West Yorkshire Communigate sites initiated communications, and a foundation for the Project.

From February 2006 further development continued at the postmaster.co.uk website.

September 2006: In an aim to further develop the Project's online resources, the domain "smithfamilies.org.uk" was aquired & hosting secured for this.  The older pages at postmaster.co.uk were

later renamed as the project's "Postmaster Gateway" (in 2008 the Postmaster page was re-vamped and became "Smith Project Central")

October 2006: The project opened the Forums

www.smithchat.com with the aim of improving communication between Smith Project members and others researching Smith family history roots of other British Isles counties.
