Established Jamestown, Virginia
in May 1607, first permanent English settlement in North America.  According to his own account, he was later saved from certain death at the hands of the Powhatan Confederacy, by the Chief's 13-year-old daughter Pocahontas,  who threw herself between him and his executioners.

 

Captain Smith became the 'first' Governor of Virginia and an advisor to the Pilgrim Fathers.

His biographers have claimed that

his father George Smith was descended from the ancient

Smiths of Crudley, Lancashire,

& his mother from the Rickands of Great Heck, Yorkshire.

of Parndon, Essex, an active liberal politician, pronounced Abolitionist

and  Unitarian.

In 1813, Florence Nightingale's grandfather, William Smith, challenged the established Church, and was responsible for championing the Bill which, for the first time, made it legal to practice Unitarianism.

Economist, Philosopher (1723-1790)

baptised in Kirkcaldy,

Fife, Scotland

 

 

His father, a customs officer died the same year as Adam’s birth, 1723.
Adam was raised by his mother, Margaret Douglas, and guardians appointed in his fathers will.

 

Studied at the University of Glasgow until 1740. Later returned for appointment as a Professor at the same University.
