Summary of Interests/Message

I am interested in finding out more
about the family of James Smith and
Mary Hodges who I think originally
came from around Bury Lancashire
and ended up in Macclesfield, Cheshire.
Living in Macclesfield in 1841-1851.

James Smith born c1810
in Lancashire ??Bury area.
married Mary Hodges c1825
at Prestbury Parish, Cheshire.

Also, John Smith m Hannah Hodges,
sister of Mary, at Prestbury.
James and John were both master
painters.

Children of James and Mary:-
* Hannah, James, John, Caroline,
** Jonathan, & William

* Hannah, the eldest daughter
married someone named Howe.
The Howe family seemed to remain
around Pott Shrigley and Bollington
(Macclesfield area, Cheshire).
One became the estate agent for
the estate.

** Jonathan Smith,  born 1840
(my great great Grandfather)
moved to Manchester around 1860.
His siblings seemed to stay around
Cheshire and did 'quite well'.

Jonathan m Catherine (Kate) Flynn
in Manchester, 1864.
They lived in Ancoats where Jonathan
died in 1881at the age of 41.

My great great Grandmother
Kate Smith nee Flynn, and the rest
of Jonathan's family stayed in
Manchester. Kate died in 1913.

Son of Jonathan Smith & Kate nee Flynn:
James, my great grandfather, married
Mary Ann Coleman, in Manchester,
and eventually came to Wales around
1910.

Son of James Smith
& Mary Ann nee Coleman:-
William, My Grandfather.
born in 1895 Collyhurst Manchester,
He moved to Wales and married
Elizabeth Tovey, 1915, Connahs Quay.
William fought in WW1 - he was in
the Welsh Fusilliers.

I know some of my grandfather's
family moved to Barrow in Furness.

My Father William Smith was born
in 1921 in Connahs Quay.

Any information would be very welcome
as I can't seem to track any of the
Macclesfield Smiths and there were
so many of them!

Married Margaret Jane Taylor (nee Fox).

Dau of Francis and Margaret Jane:-
Margaret Emma SMITH

nb at Dec 08 - contacting Sylvia to
check spelling of Wormesly, and
should this be Womersley? (a Parish
town slightly north-west of Doncaster)
or Wormley Hill in Fishlake Parish?
(a few miles east of Doncaster)

[back to top & Column 2]

Joseph Bellas SMITH's father was

Henry SMITH, who was baptised in

1801 at Preston.

Henry was a spinner and he married

Mary BELLAS in 1831 at Preston.

Their children were Thomas Henry and

Joseph Bellas, and at Joseph Bellas's

baptism they lived in Ribbleton Lane.

Mary died in 1847 & Henry then
married Elizabeth GILLETT in 1851

at Preston.  They had a daughter,
Elizabeth Ann, born Preston, & then
a son who was born & died at sea in
1856 – the family were on their way to
Australia, where two more daughters
were born in the suburbs of what is
now Melbourne, Victoria.

I would love to know why they went to

Australia –  perhaps it was for the Gold

Rush – perhaps it was all over by the

time they arrived?

By 1861 Henry & his family were back
in Preston, living with Henry’s brother John!

The baptism records for St John, Preston,
show that Henry was the son of

Ralph & Betty Smith & he had siblings

Sarah 1792; George 1794; Alice 1796;

Squire 1798; Peter 1803; Betsy 1805;

Isabella 1806; Ralph 1808; John 1810;

& William 1812.

I have managed to trace the families
of Squire & John, & would love to make
contact with anyone who recognises
them or the other siblings. One of
Squire’s sons, John, moved to the
Bacup / Haslingden area.

Ralph & Betty SMITH must have been
born around 1772 or earlier, but I have
no idea where.

It would be wonderful to discover

where Ralph & Betty married & where

they were from!
