Summary of Interests/Message

Smith Family 1 : of Preston area, Lancashire.
My maternal grandmother was Alice Smith,
who was born at 100 Villiers St. Preston on
9/7/1885.

She married my grandfather, Edwin Illingworth
at Emmanuel Parish Church, Preston, 20
years and 1 day later on 10/7/1905 -
HIS 20th birthday. Hence Alice was 1 day
older than her husband!

A photograph of Alice Smith has been

included below, which was probably taken
c.1905/6.

Alice and Edwin had 6 children, Louis,

Mabeth, Alice, Lily, Doris (my mother) and Jenny.

Footnotes by Carole

Waterhead Mills

In the 1820s,  was described as....

"a village in the ancient parish of

Rochdale, part in West Riding of

Yorkshire and part in Lancashire".

In the 1840s, Waterhead was recorded

in Lancashire's Victoria County History

as then part of the Parish of Prestwich

cum Oldham.

19th Century Parish Registers of

St Mary's Oldham record baptisms of

residents of Waterhead Mill.

[Baptisms 1822-1829 at LancsOPC]

Both Rochdale and Oldham overlap the
pre-1974 traditional county boundary of
Lancashire and Yorkshire, the area now

part of the modern-day administrative

county of Greater Manchester.

well-known panorama of Oldham, by Mr Knott,
a local photographer in the town at that time,

Alice was one of 6 children born to
William Smith and Alice Johnson.
William Smith was born about 1857 in Preston,
and he was the eldest child of John Smith
and Ellen Leeming.

After much fruitless John Smith searching in
Preston, I eventually found that John was

born in 1834 in Alston, near Longridge Lancs.

His father was another John Smith, born

1804 also at Alston, who married Margaret
Seed in 1824 at Ribchester, which must have
been the Parish covering Alston at that time.

John Smith senior’s parents were James Smith
and probably Elizabeth Bashaw who married in
1791 in Ribchester.

I have now hit the ‘brick wall’ and am still trying to find the birth details of both James and Elizabeth.

Smith Family 2 : of Kippax, WR.Yorkshire

My West Yorks Smiths all came from
Kippax near Leeds.

My 4xGt Grandmother was Phebe Smith
born Kippax in 1763.

Phebe married Thomas Marshall in 1792.

Her parents were Richard Smith and
Isabel Watson who married in 1753.

Richard and Isabel had 8 children, Sarah,
Joseph, Benjamin, Richard, Phebe,
Samuel, John and Elizabeth.
These names are significant because.....

I was unable to trace Richard Smith's birth.
(Assumed to be c.1730). However his
grandfather was another Richard Smith
who married Sarah Hudson in 1704.
Their children were Joseph, Johnathan,
Richard, Sarah, Joshua, Benjamin,
Samuel and Phebe.

Almost identical names to those

Richard and Isabel used 49 years later,

but which of these sons was

Richard junior's father, I wonder?
