Summary of Interests/Message

I'm new to genealogy so any help is
gratefully received.

So far from Census records I can find
that my Smith line goes back to
Ossett in 1783 - John Smith.

John Smith (b.Ossett 1783)

m.Mary (b.1781).
John d.between 1851-61, Mary d.1841-51.

Son of John and Mary was
Jesse Smith (b 1818).
Jesse m.Mary between 1851-61
(Mary b.1823 d.between 1881-91).
Jesse d. between the 1891-1901

Line continues........
Fred Smith (b. Ossett 1858)
Walter Smith (b Chickenley nr Ossett 1886)
Frank Smith (b Greetland nr Halifax in 1914)
Walter Smith, my father, born in Greetland,
Me - Martin Smith (born in Halifax).

Also my great grandfather (Walter) was
the 3rd son of Joseph. The first was William
and the 2nd was George. As far as I know
all 3 served in the great war. Walter died
but what happened to William and George?

Does anyone have any data pertaining to a
John Smith born in Ossett cum Gawthorpe
in or around 1783?

Summary of Interests/Message

My Smith connection is Richard Smith
from Heptonstall.

His children carried such middle names
as Sutcliff, Fielden and Greenwood.

Richard was born about 1810.

He married Sarah Cawthorn
of the Sheffield area, born 1828.

They were married in Pennsylvania USA. Richard and Sarah's first child was born
in USA in 1845. Richard evidently
emigrated before that date.

Did you know?

Heptonstall, in the Parish of Halifax, Yorkshire West Riding, has two churches in the same churchyard. The oldest church, St.Thomas a Beckett is in ruins following destruction of the tower in 1847. In the same yard is the church of St. Thomas the Apostle, built 1850-1854, and is still in use.

For some excellent images of Heptonstall churches, see Genuki page
