Summary of Interests/Message

My paternal ancestors were from the

Lancashire & West Yorkshire area.

My grandfather was born in Newton Heath,

but his father’s (John Smith) ancestors were born in Salford.

His mother’s (Mary Ellen Farrar) family

were Farrar’s & Haigh’s and born in Rastrick/Brighouse.

I am interested in finding previous

generations, particularly finding out if one
of the maiden names was Holt.

Supposedly, my grandfather’s & uncle’s

middle name (Holt) is an old family

name.

My grandfather (Thomas Holt Smith)
immigrated to the US around 1900.

Summary of Interests/Message

I have been trying to trace my Smith ancestors
of Leeds, West Yorkshire for some time.

My g/grandmother Esther Sugden Smith was
the daughter of Robert Smith, a flax dresser of
Hunslet.
Her mother was Eliza Ann ???

In the 1841 census they are shown as follows:
Moorside, Hunslet
Robert, 45 Flax Dresser ; Eliza, 30
Emma 15 ; Ann 10 ; Esther 7
Elizabeth,5 ; William,2
I understand that ages were rounded down.

Robert Smith does not appear with the family
in the 1852 census index. Free BMD shows
a death for a Robert Smith of Hunslet in 1845.
His wife Eliza Ann was born in Hunslet in 1806/7.
She was still alive in 1881. I have no further
information about her.

I found christenings for Anne, Elizabeth x 2
and Esther Sugden Smith,
daughters of Robert and Eliza,

at St Patricks Church, York Rd, Leeds.

Esther Sugden was born in 1834/5
(a census reference shows Halton)
and died in Leeds in 1928.

She married Robert Horner in 1863(died 1866)
and Joseph Eddison in 1867.
She and Joseph had four children:
Joseph William, Ann Eliza, Martha Esther
and Emma Elizabeth.

Joseph was a wheelwright.

In 1881 they lived at 3 Envoy Yard, Hunslet.
Joseph died in 1882.

Summary of Interests/Message

Charles Smith was born on 2 May 1808 in
Liverpool and was christened on 22nd May
at St. Nicholas, Liverpool.

He was the son of John Smith & Mary Jones.

Charles married Mary Wild (b.1809)
in Manchester Cathedral, 18 Feb 1828.

They had three children,
Thomas Smith born 1 March, 1829,
John b. 27 Nov 1831,
Charles b. 18 Jan 1835, died as infant.
***
I have found this family living at Chorlton on
Medlock, Manchester in the 1841 census.

The following year, in 1842, Charles & Mary Smith, with sons Thomas and John emigrated to NSW, Australia on the ship Nabob. They lived in Sydney,
Charles was an engineer.
*** As far as I have been able to find, they had no other children born after emigration to Australia.

Charles died on 17 August 1871 at Surry Hills,
Sydney, Australia and was buried on 19th August,
1871 at the Necropolis cemetery, Rookwood, Sydney, Australia.

It is quite difficult deciding which John Smith was the father of Charles.  That's about all I have on him
to date.(at last update Jan 2007)
